Put the same touch behavior behind thick safety glass, next to a motor drive, in rain or under an operator’s gloves, and the experience can collapse.

Industrial projected capacitive touch—usually called PCAP or CTP—can work in those conditions. But glove mode, water rejection and noise immunity are not properties of the touch controller alone. They come from tuning the complete assembly.

Reliable industrial touch requires four elements to be designed together:

the touch-sensor pattern;

a controller with suitable signal processing;

the final cover glass and optical stack;

grounding, power and firmware tuned in the finished product.

Changing any one of these can require retuning.

Why thick gloves are difficult

PCAP detects a change in the sensor’s electric field. A bare finger creates a stronger coupling than a finger separated by a glove and thick cover lens. Increasing sensitivity can recover the signal, but excessive gain also makes the system more vulnerable to noise, water droplets and unintended touches.

Good glove performance therefore balances:

sensor electrode geometry;

cover thickness and dielectric properties;

controller transmit voltage and scan settings;

detection threshold and filtering;

glove material and thickness;

required touch size and gesture behavior.

“Works with gloves” is incomplete. A nitrile examination glove, leather work glove and insulated winter glove are three different test conditions. Supply real samples during development.

Water rejection is not the same as underwater touch

Water changes capacitance and can bridge multiple sensor channels. Without suitable algorithms, droplets may create ghost touches, draw false lines or block a valid finger.

A water-rejection mode attempts to identify the spatial and temporal signature of water and suppress false events. Depending on the controller and tuning, the system may continue accepting a single-finger input, restrict gestures or temporarily reject all touches while the surface is flooded.

Define the expected behavior:

droplets from rain;

a wet finger;

flowing water;

salt water;

cleaning spray;

condensation at the edge;

operation while fully submerged.

These are not equivalent. Many products need safe rejection rather than full wet operation. For a medical or industrial control, “no false activation” may matter more than “always accepts a touch.”

Noise immunity starts outside the algorithm

Motors, inverters, switching supplies, radios and poorly grounded chargers can inject noise into the touch system. A controller may filter some interference, but hardware design determines how much reaches it.

Review:

clean and stable touch-controller power;

sensor and FPC routing away from switching nodes;

ground reference between display, touch and chassis;

shielding strategy and shield termination;

display clock harmonics;

USB or I²C cable routing;

charger and external power modes;

enclosure metal near the sensor border.

Test touch performance while the real equipment operates at worst case: motor starting, radio transmitting, charger connected, backlight at maximum and gloves or water present. Bench testing the touch panel on a quiet USB adapter is not enough.

Cover glass changes the electrical design

Industrial cover lenses improve impact resistance, cleanability and product appearance. QIHAN supports custom cover glass, including thickness, shape, printing and AR/AG/AF surface options. The planned stack may range from relatively thin glass to several millimeters, depending on application.

Thicker glass weakens touch coupling. Printed ink, adhesive thickness, air gaps and nearby metal can also affect sensitivity. If an IK impact rating or other enclosure rating is required, the complete product—not the loose cover lens—must be designed and tested to that standard.

This distinction prevents a common procurement mistake: treating “strong glass” as proof of a certified finished assembly.

A practical industrial touch validation matrix

Condition

What to verify

Bare dry finger

Accuracy, edge performance, gestures and latency

Required gloves

Tap, drag, button size and false-reject rate

Water droplets

No ghost touch; defined valid-touch behavior

Wet finger

Accuracy and safe operation

Maximum cover thickness

Sensitivity margin and edge performance

Temperature limits

Start-up, tracking and recalibration

Motor or inverter active

No false events or lockup

Charger and communications active

Noise immunity in every power mode

Cleaning chemicals

Surface durability and unintended activation

Record firmware and tuning versions with every sample. Touch performance can change even when the mechanical drawing does not.

PCAP or resistive touch?

PCAP provides modern gesture support, high optical clarity and excellent durability behind glass. Resistive touch can remain a practical option when operation with any glove or passive stylus is mandatory and multi-touch is unnecessary.

The best technology follows the operator workflow. Do not choose PCAP solely because it feels more current.

Frequently asked questions

Can PCAP work through 6 mm glass?

It can be possible with the right sensor, controller and tuning, but performance depends on glass composition, ink, adhesive, touch size and noise environment. Validate the exact final stack.

Does water rejection make a touchscreen waterproof?

No. Water rejection is touch behavior. Waterproofing depends on the cover, seals, enclosure, cable exits and assembly process.

Can touch tuning be completed before the enclosure is ready?

Initial tuning can, but final tuning should use the production-intent cover glass, display, grounding, enclosure and power supply.

QIHAN integrates small and medium TFT or OLED displays with custom PCAP and resistive touch panels, cover glass, optical bonding and interface electronics.
